Best Vegan Roasts in London

The Best Vegan Roasts in London By Sean O’Callaghan

I was a little bit taken aback by just how serious people were about Sunday roasts when I first moved to the UK in 1998. Back in Australia, roast dinners in the middle of the day were usually reserved for Christmas Day in my family and this hot meal happened only if the weather didn’t send us to the beach with bowls of salad and ice cream instead! Roast dinners were just not a big deal for me when I was younger.

But in the UK, fierce debates spring up seemingly out of nowhere if you suggest what makes the perfect Sunday roast dinner. I’ve travelled up and down the country and everywhere has its own twist. The only consensus I see when it comes to what should be on the plate is what we can refer to as the holy trinity of roast dinners. Roast potatoes, gravy, and a Yorkshire pudding.

My knowledge of (and interest in) Sunday roast dinners is now firmly established and after moving back to London a few months ago, I’ve been busy exploring the best vegan roasts in london.

The Spread Eagle

The Spread Eagle is a 100 per cent vegan pub in Homerton, a district in the London Borough of Hackney (thespreadeaglelondon.co.uk). It’s the simple truth that this pub is one of the finest places in the UK capital for vegan eating. It’s as though the best gastro pub you ever visited suddenly went vegan.

At the time of writing, Sunday diners at The Spread Eagle could choose from beet Wellington, nut roast, or pot roast celeriac served with all the trimmings. Those tasty sides include a Yorkshire pudding that gets rave reviews from locals.

I also recommend making it a boozy adventure during your visit to The Spread Eagle. The cocktail list is one of the most impressive I’ve come across in a vegan venue. Sip on the Smoked Pineapple Cosmopolitan as you wait for your Sunday roast to arrive at the table!

The Amersham Arms

Vegans located south of the river Thames also get to take part in the ritual of Sunday roast dinner.
The Amersham Arms is a pub popular with local rock music lovers in the South London neighbourhood of New Cross (theamershamarms.net). Stop by at night for live bands or a comedy set in the 300-seat  performance space, a venue heralded by culture writers far and wide.

As a foodie, The Amersham Arms is most appealing to me each Sunday. This is the day when in-house vegan kitchen The Gnarbecue serves up their decadent roast dinners fit for a rockstar.

The Sunday roast plate by The Gnarbecue features ‘beef’ and mushroom Wellington, garlic kale, glazed carrots, stuffing balls, gravy, a Yorksire pudding, and the crunchiest roast potatoes I have ever enjoyed.

Café Van Gogh

A little bit closer to the centre of London but still on the south side is Café Van Gogh, a beautiful vegan eatery located on Brixton Road (cafevangogh.co.uk).

Café Van Gogh is the best of everything. With a completely plant-based menu that changes regularly to reflect the season and fresh ingredient availability, the café is also noteworthy for being a non-profit enterprise founded to create opportunities for young people who might otherwise be excluded from hospitality training and careers.

Ask anyone who dines regularly with Café Van Gogh and they will tell you the menu is world class. The Sunday roast is an impressive serving of nut and butternut squash Wellington with pesto, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and red onion gravy.
