A graphic video shared by Mercy for Animals shows farm workers throwing and hitting chickens whilst appearing to make jokes at the expense of the animals. The video was filmed undercover and has been shared hundreds of times on social media. The video shows one worker trying to rip a live chicken in half and the public have responded in droves to speak out against the cruel acts of the workers.
Elite Farm Services President, Dwayne Dueck, said: “We are sickened with the footage and want to ensure all our suppliers and producers that this is not reflective of who we are, our fundamental beliefs or behaviours we accept from our employees.”
However, it has since been confirmed that supervisors at Elite Farms at from Lilydale witnessed the abuse, according to Mercy for Animals managing director. It is unclear at the moment how many employees will be fired with reports of 5 jobs lost already.
Marcie Moriarty from the Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Animals said to C-TV: “Not only would the workers, obviously, anybody depicted in that video we’d be recommending charges to; but there were supervisors involved, and I think, too, there’s a precedent that companies should and can be held responsible.”
