Mindful brews

Low and no-alcohol drinks for keeping your head clear By Oliver Coningham

With each new year, there’s always the opportunity to set new intentions and goals for the year ahead. It can be tempting to make them quite broad and almost unachievable with goals such as ‘lose weight’ or ‘travel more’. If you look at the motivation behind your goal you can usually break them down into something that’s more attainable. The motivation behind ‘travelling more’ may be to explore different countries and cultures.

Which countries would you like to visit? What cultures would you like to learn more about? Again, for people who wish to ‘lose weight’, it may be a desire to feel healthier. What easy, actionable tasks could you do to help feel that way? Prepare more homemade meals? Spend less on takeaways?

By far the most popular New Year’s resolutions are those that involve removing something from our lives — smoking, alcohol, junk food etc. The first step towards this can be by becoming more mindful of our habits and actions. Allowing a short pause before we reach for that bottle of beer or chocolate cookie and allow us time to examine our choices and be mindful of our intentions.

With this in mind, this month we have focussed on mindful drinking and have chosen a selection of low or alcohol-free drinks that are designed to keep your head clear and increase your awareness.
