What do you think about Nando’s new pea protein ‘chicken’?
At the beginning of this week, Nando’s pea protein ‘chicken’ was launched, sending shock waves across the UK’s vegan population.
The popular chain restaurant’s first-ever plant-based ‘chicken’ is aptly named The Great Imitator, and was crafted to taste just like its signature PERi-PERi chicken breast fillet.
However, it is made from innovative pea protein – the up-and-coming ingredient that is becoming more and more popular in the vegan food industry.
Nando’s pea protein meat-alternative launched on the 13th October, with the intention of helping flexitarians who want to reduce their meat intake, but don’t want to compromise on the great taste of PERi-PERi.
Step in the right direction
Dawn Carr, director of Vegan Corporate Projects, PETA, says: “PETA is delighted to have played a part in Nando’s journey to putting this delicious plant-based chicken on the table.”
“Nando’s can’t guarantee zero risk of cross-contamination, so it’s not calling it vegan, but as all the ingredients in the burger and pitta versions are completely animal-free – right down to the mayo – we say these are an excellent choice for vegans, vegetarians, meat-reducers, and chickens. Cluck yes!”
Whilst Nando’s new option is a fantastic step in the right direction – being completely free from animal ingredients, the popular chain should go a step further and add new vegan-only grilling stations to ensure no cross contamination.
The company have stated that the new vegan chick’n launch comes as part of a move to cater to the nations changing dietary preferences, as well as develop more sustainable product options reducing the carbon footprint of every Nando’s meal.
Whilst this is extremely commendable, to fully achieve their desire to cater to changing dietary habits, Nando’s should implement meat-free cooking stations.
What is Pea Protein?
Nando’s new meat-free product is made from pea protein – a source of protein that is derived and extracted in powder form from yellow and green split peas.
Nando’s choice of using pea protein in their new plant-based option follows a wave of interest in the ingredient – which is gaining favour year on year.
With many vegans choosing to avoid GMO, non-organic and soya products because of health concerns, clean label organic pea protein is becoming a leader in the market.
In a recent report, New Food Magazine said: “Those who are concerned about their family’s health tend to prefer food free from additives, hormones, and antibiotics, and hence, opt for natural, as well as organic products.”
“Organic pea protein has thus gained more popularity in food manufacturing companies as it is a clean label product which are presumed to be healthy, natural, and nutritious, increasing the demand for organic pea protein in the global market.”
