Yesterday evening Vegan Life was invited to the launch of Pizza Express’ new vegan cheese at their Leicester Square branch.
Pizza Express Head of Food Holly Davies admitted, at the exclusive talk, that the move had been a “long time coming” but that the chain was adamant that finding the most perfect cheese was paramount.
Currently, Pizza Express offer the Pianta on their menu, which is 100 per cent vegan, but this new move will mean that all pizzas will be available with vegan cheese therefore also making the restaurant more accessible for those with a lactose intolerance.
The star of the show was the Vegan Giardiniera, which will initially be introduced as part of the Summer Specials menu before being added to the menu permanently. The Vegan Giardiniera combines artichokes with asparagus, red onion, garlic oil, black olives and their vegan mozzarella alternative.
If you have been vegan for any time at all, you will know the daily cheese struggle. There are so many cheeses out there that don’t have the right taste, look or texture. Pizza Express has clearly taken these concerns into account and when the pizza arrived the mozzarella alternative looked great. It had melted well and covered the pizza and toppings well. The taste and texture were equally surprising. The cheese does not have an overpowering cheesy taste and is more cream-like in taste and the texture is soft and moist. It really is a very good cheese alternative.
Pizza Express’ have also rolled out training to their staff to educate their restaurants about what being a vegan actually means and the belief systems which back up the vegan lifestyle. This means that when you walk into any Pizza Express restaurant and ask for a vegan option, your waitress or waiter should know what veganism actually means. As if this news wasn’t good enough, there were hints that a vegan chocolate dessert may be arriving on menus in the future. Hallelujah!
The vegan mozzarella alternative will be available from 20th June 2017 in all 460 restaurants across Great Britain.
