Going to University is a once in a lifetime trip, that you have been waiting for your entire life. It’s a turning point where you finally have the opportunity to move out, become independent, meet new people and most importantly you learn to flourish.
The thought of starting this new chapter may already have you overwhelmed with many emotions (not to mention, worries as to how the Coronavirus might affect your student experience). You may be feeling anxious and excited both at the same time!
If you are following a vegan lifestyle, you may be concerned about the vegan options available at your university as well as fitting in with your new friends as a vegan.

This is your official guide to being vegan at university. Below are tips on how to approach veganism at university with a positive and optimistic outlook, making it the best experience of your life while being vegan.
Tip #1 – Join a Vegan Society at your university
One of the exciting elements of university is the range of societies you can join to make new friends and indulge in your favourite activities. The best way to find your vegan tribe at university is to join a Vegan Society. If you don’t have one at your University, create it and take the lead! Joining a Vegan Society will make you feel right at home with your tribe. Even if societies can now only meet up virtually, they are still super useful to join.
Tip #2 – Recommend vegan meals to your university canteen chef
If you’re concerned about vegan options at your university, speak to the head chef about veganism and the growing popularity of meat-free meals. Recommend the chef to some incredible vegan recipes that they can serve at the canteen for everyone to enjoy.
Tip #3 – Host a Vegan Taco Tuesday with your flat mates
Everyone loves Taco Tuesday! Introduce your flat mates to veganism and share your lifestyle with them. It will help you to bond with each other and enable them to understand your way of living, while eating delicious tacos! (Recipe below.)
Tip# 4 – Vegan activism at university
If you want to channel your inner vegan activist, get in touch with your university and ask if you can deliver a speech (in person or via Zoom depending on COVID-19 restrictions) on sustainability, health or animal rights to inform students and staff on the vegan movement.
Tip #5 – Just be yourself
Just breathe and relax. We often get in our own way by overthinking and overwhelming ourselves with endless thoughts. Remember to always be yourself and have the experience of your life!
Creamy Tofu Tacos
Makes 8 Tacos – Serves 4
Bursting with flavour and vibrancy these crispy tofu tacos can brighten up anyone’s day.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
- 1 block of firm tofu
- 1/3 cup of soy sauce
- 2 tbsp paprika
- 2 tbsp of black pepper
- 8tbs hummus
- 1 tbsp fresh grated ginger
- 2 cloves of minced garlic
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 8 Mini tortilla wraps
- Lime wedges
- Handful of fresh coriander
- Hot Sauce
Serve with fresh salad of your choice such as diced avocado, cherry tomatoes and spring onions.
- Chop tofu in cube size piece and marinate in soy sauce paprika, black pepper, garlic and ginger. Put in fridge or leave aside while you prep your salad.
- Heat frying pan to a medium heat and preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 5.
- Add olive oil into the frying pan and then add marinated tofu.
- Stir for 5 minutes until tofu is crispy and cooked.
- Warm tortilla wraps in oven for 2 minutes.
- Spread hummus on tortilla wrap with tofu, fresh salad toppings, squeezed lime wedge, coriander and a drizzle of your favourite hot sauce.
