Like Mini Drumsticks, Root Mash & Gravy

What goes perfectly with a slice of vegetable pie? Mash and drumsticks, of course! Jazz up your mash by adding a variety of root veg to the mix. Swede, celeriac and carrot all work really, really well mixed in with the mashed potatoes. Serve with Like Mini Drumsticks from LikeMeat. Serves 2


  • 1 packet of Like Mini Drumsticks (180g
  • Vegetable cooking oil, for frying

For the root mash:

  • 400g (14.1 oz) potatoes (floury or fluffy varities like King Edward or Maris Piper makes the best mash)
  • 200g (7oz) celeriac, swede and/or carrots — or beetroot for an extra colourful mash
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 100ml (3.3 fl oz) plant-based milk
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the gravy:

  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 stalks of fresh thyme
  • 2 stalks of fresh sage
  • 200ml (6.7 fl oz) red wine
  • 200ml (6.7 fl oz) vegetable stock
  • 1 tbsp sugar or agave syrup
  • Salt and pepper, to taste


  1. Peel the potatoes and the other root vegetables and cut into large cubes. Cook the root vegetables in plenty of salted water until tender.
  2. Drain the water (save 200ml/6.7 fl oz in a separate container, to adjust the consistency of your mash).
  3. Mash the root veggies. Add the olive oil, plant-based milk and salt and pepper to taste. Adjust consistency with the saved potato water, if needed.
  4. To make the sauce, peel and roughly chop the onion and garlic and fry in a saucepan with the olive oil.
  5. When the garlic and onion is soft and slightly brown, add the sugar and let it melt and caramelise for a minute until golden but not burned.
  6. Add the herbs and red wine and cook until the wine is reduced to about half. Add the veggie stock and reduce to about half again.
  7. Drain the sauce into a bowl to get rid of onion and herbs. Have a taste and season with salt and pepper
  8. Fry the Like Mini Drumsticks in a little vegetable oil until golden, about 4-5 minutes.
  9. Serve Like Mini Drumsticks and root mash with green beans or peas, and if you want, with a slice of your favourite pie! Cover it all with the gorgeously fragrant gravy
